Normal Delivery of a Baby

Now that you have managed to establish that your pain is indeed true and on your way to the hospital, lets look at what happens (and can possibly happen) once we get there.

The doctor/medical staff check for possible last minute complications if they decide that all is well, a normal delivery (Normal Vaginal Delivery) or as they call it – Normal Vaginal delivery is performed.

NORMAL VAGINAL DELIVERY

This process can be split into 3 stages

1) DILATION OF THE CERVIX

Most of us will feel regular and strong contracting during this stage. The cervix starts dilating and opens as much as 10cm over a period of time. Some of you may experience your waterbeds bursting. Dont worry! All is well and normal

2) PUSHING THE BABY OUT

Once the cervix has dilated close to 10cm, and the baby’s head engaged in the pelvis, some of you may feel an urge to push – a sensation that will be similar to that of wanting to pass of motion. You need to start pushing the baby out. It can take 1 to 2 hours for the baby to come out, but this can happen quicker if you have previous vaginal deliveries. In some cases, doctors may may make a small surgical cut in the muscular area between the vagina and the anus (the area called the perineum) just before delivery to enlarge your vaginal opening. This is to make it easy for the baby’s heads to come through.

3) PASSING OF THE PLACENTA

Once the baby has come out fully, the placenta starts to separate from the womb and comes out by itself
