Normal Delivery of a baby can happen just due to the natural contractions of the mother and of course with the assistance of the doctor and the medical staff.
There are instances where the delivery does not progress inspite of the best efforts of the mother. The Doctor will use instruments to assist in the delivery of the baby which is commonly known as Instrumental (Normal)Vaginal Delivery.
Instrumental vaginal delivery is the process where the doctor helps you deliver your baby vaginally with the use of forceps or vacuum cup. This is sometimes needed to shorten the delivery process or when the mother is becoming exhausted .It is only done with you and your baby’s best interest in mind.
FORCEPS DELIVERY – Forceps resembles a pair of large spoons that are positioned on the sides of the baby’s head .They are gently inserted into the womb to hold the baby’s head.Coupled with your pushing efforts ,your doctor will help you deliver your baby. After the birth ,there may be some graze and bruising to your baby’s head and face .These markets are not permanent and will disappear within days ,causing no lasting effects.
VACUUM DELIVERY – Vacuum cups are round plastic cup that are placed on the baby”s head and kept there by suction pressure .Coupled with your pushing efforts ,your doctor wii help you deliver your baby.Babies born in this way will have an area of swelling on the head (know as chignon) .this swelling will disappear after 24 hours.
Do not be worried as these are procedures followed during the normal delivery of a baby.
